Dear families of the Willowgrove School community,
As we get closer to the opening of the new Willowgrove School, Saskatoon Public Schools would like to provide an update on the construction and preparations taking place.
At a recent meeting, the general contractor for the construction of the new school reaffirmed its commitment to complete all required pre-occupancy work before the end of December 2014. If this work progresses as expected, the school will begin offering classes for students on January 5, 2015. Since it is a shared facility between Saskatoon Public Schools, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools and the City of Saskatoon, both Willowgrove School and Holy Family School will open at the same time.
Over the next few weeks, a number of important construction milestones must be met to ensure the facility’s readiness for students, including ensuring it is a dust-free environment and testing key mechanical and electrical systems. Our school division is beginning preparations to ensure that equipment, furniture, technical requirements and staff resources are in place for the January opening. We want to ensure that a safe, secure and comfortable learning environment will be ready for students and staff when we begin offering classes. We appreciate the hard work of numerous staff members, contractors and other related stakeholders that are helping to deliver this project.
Thank you to the students and families of Willowgrove School, who have shown incredible understanding and patience as we worked through the contingency plan this fall. Our dedicated staff members at Willowgrove, Forest Grove and Dr. John G. Egnatoff schools have done an admirable job of ensuring all students have a comfortable learning environment by being creative and thoughtful in adapting to students’ needs. The official opening of this incredible facility is drawing near and we look forward to sharing it with all of you.
The school division will provide another school update to parents in approximately a month, at which time we hope to confirm the opening date. As we get closer to the school’s opening, detailed information about procedures for the start of classes in the new building will be shared with students and families. If you have questions, please contact Principal Shane Armstrong at 306-683- 7971 or by email at ArmstrongSha@spsd.sk.ca.

UPDATE, OCTOBER 29: Holy Family Catholic School
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As you have seen when travelling past our new Holy Family School, much work has been completed during the summer and this fall. As promised this spring, we are providing an update now on construction progress at the school.
Representatives from the school divisions, their consultants and the construction firm Ellis-Don met recently to further discuss the opening date for Holy Family Catholic School and Willowgrove Public School.
The target date to begin classes at the schools remains January 5, 2015. Since this is a shared facility between Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Saskatoon Public Schools and the City of Saskatoon, the schools will open at the same time.
As construction progresses, we continue to track the milestones that must be achieved to complete the schools. The safety and comfort of students and staff remains our top priority.
We have started the commissioning process that will see the buildings’ heating and mechanical systems tested and adjusted. This can take up to six weeks. As this occurs, flooring, cabinetry and painting is also being completed. The asphalt and concrete outside the facilities is nearly finished.
We understand the disappointment that resulted in not being able to start school as planned in our new building this September. However, we are extremely proud of how our school community has adapted to our temporary quarters in St. Volodymyr and Father Robinson. Firstly, parents and students should be commended for their flexibility and patience as they adjusted to this situation. Secondly, I would like to thank our staff members who led by example with their positive attitudes. They have started to build the Holy Family community – even without the four walls of Holy Family Catholic School.
We will provide another update in approximately one month as we draw closer to moving into our new school. If you have any questions, I invite you to contact me at 659-7850 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
